Children's physiotherapy

A pediatric physiotherapist specializes in treating children up to and including 18 years of age. Every child develops in their own way, and sometimes that development progresses differently or more slowly than expected. A pediatric physiotherapist helps children learn to move better and gain confidence in their own bodies.

Children can consult a pediatric physiotherapist after an injury or trauma. This can help them return to the sports field safely and responsibly. We also support children with motor developmental delays or motor skills challenges. These include children who struggle with physical education, fall frequently, or are perceived as clumsy.

Together with the child, the parent(s)/guardian(s), and – if necessary – the teacher, we work on goals that are appropriate for the child's situation. This way, we ensure that the child can participate better in sports and games and enjoys exercise more.

The treatments consist of playful exercises: through fun and varied activities, the child learns to improve their motor skills. Parents/caregivers also receive tips and advice to continue practicing and encouraging positive behaviors at home.

Growth problems in children

Growth problems are common in growing children and adolescents, usually between the ages of 8 and 16. These problems often arise from strain on the body during or after a growth spurt. The knees and ankles are the most common areas where pain occurs.

The most common growth disorders are Osgood-Schlatter syndrome and Sever's disease. Osgood-Schlatter syndrome often affects the knee, a condition in which the pain is usually located just below the kneecap. Sever's disease can also affect the ankle/heel, causing children to experience pain at the back of the heel.

Growth pain often develops gradually and without a clear cause. They are usually nagging or stabbing pains that worsen with (sports) exertion. Although these complaints are harmless, they can be bothersome during exercise and sports.

Using a targeted test, the physiotherapist analyzes your child's movement and growth stage. Based on these results, we can work specifically to improve their resilience, guide their recovery, and advise them on appropriate forms of exercise and loading. This allows your child to continue moving without unnecessary discomfort.

Motor development in children

Motor skills are the ability to move, and they play a vital role in every child's development. We distinguish between gross and fine motor skills:

  • Fine motor skills involve the smaller, precise movements of the arms, hands, and fingers. Examples include cutting, drawing, coloring, or picking something up and putting it down.
  • Gross motor skills refer to the larger movements of the body, such as crawling, walking, running, jumping, throwing and catching.

Learning new motor skills requires repetition. Through frequent practice, children develop their muscle strength, coordination, and self-confidence, which forms the foundation for further development.

Every child develops at their own pace. Sometimes this development is slower than expected. In such cases, a pediatric physiotherapist can offer support. It's important to recognize early on when a child needs extra support, so we can provide the right stimulation at the right time.

Do you have questions or concerns about your child's motor development? Feel free to contact our pediatric physiotherapist. Together, we'll determine what your child needs to develop optimally.

How does it work?

During pediatric physiotherapy, we look for any current deficiencies and/or limitations: mobility, balance, coordination, strength endurance, power, and speed. These vary from person to person. Therefore, you will receive personalized exercise therapy.

All treatments

Treatment - exercise therapy - 01

Exercise therapy

During the exercise therapy we look for shortcomings and/or limitations that are present at that moment: mobility, balance, coordination, strength endurance, strength and speed. They differ per individual. You therefore receive exercise therapy that is tailored to your needs.

Shoe advice: gait analysis - 01

Running analysis

During the gait analysis, your old shoes will be assessed. You have to walk up and down in front of the camera a few times to film and analyze your walking pattern. You then walk barefoot in front of the camera several times and, if necessary, in corrected shoes to judge the difference. The gait pattern is then assessed frame by frame to determine whether there is compensation from the feet, knees and/or hip/pelvis and appropriate shoe advice can be given.

Specific treatments - mulligan - 01

Mulligan concept

The Mulligan concept is a safe and effective way of mobilizing joints. The therapy is pain-free, should give immediate improvement, which improvement should last for a long time.

Specific treatments - shock wave - 1

Shockwave

Shockwave is a treatment technique in which patients are exposed to powerful 'shock waves', which are precisely directed by means of a treatment head. In this way, these waves have a mechanical effect at the desired location in the body.

Specific treatments - ultrasound - 01

Ultrasound

Using ultrasound, we can assess the tendons and muscles that may be involved in the complaint. This ensures that the treatment can be better tailored to the structure that is affected.
