Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark (GLA:D) is a treatment program specially developed for patients suffering from hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. The program, which originated in Denmark, combines education and exercise therapy to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve the quality of life of patients.
The GLA:D program consists of an educational video and an exercise program, which consists of 12 training sessions given by a certified physical therapist. The physical therapist guides patients through a series of exercises designed to improve joint strength, flexibility, and functionality. By actively involving patients in their treatment, they gain control over their condition.
The program is based on ten years of scientific research among 100.000 patients in different countries worldwide. This extensive research has shown that the GLA:D program is effective in reducing pain and improving physical function in patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis. In the Netherlands, a pilot study was conducted with the collaboration of general practitioners, physiotherapists and the Maxima Medical Center (MMC).
The goal of the GLA:D program is to postpone or even prevent possible surgery for a knee and/or hip prosthesis. This goal is achieved by providing patients with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively manage their condition. With regular exercise and education, patients can often avoid surgery, leading to a significant reduction in healthcare costs and an improved quality of life.
More than 1700 patients participated in the pilot study in the Netherlands. The results of this study showed that after following the GLA:D program, patients saw a significant improvement in their physical functioning, a decrease in pain, an increase in quality of life, a reduction in the use of pain medication and less absenteeism due to illness. . These results highlight the effectiveness of the program and the benefits for patients.
The pillars of the GLA:D program are as follows:
- Referral by the GP: Patients with (beginning) hip and/or knee osteoarthritis are referred by their GP to a GLA:D physiotherapist in their area.
- Scientifically proven treatment: The GLA:D physiotherapist treats patients according to a program based on scientific research.
- Self-management and prevention: Complaints are reduced because the patient gains control over his/her condition and a hip or knee prosthesis can be postponed or even prevented.
The added value of the GLA:D program is considerable. It offers uniformity and transparency in the care offering, ensures that care is tailored to the patient's needs and can be delivered close to patients. In addition, the program leads to a decrease in pointless appointments in secondary care and improves the accessibility of care.
In conclusion, the GLA:D program represents a significant advance in the treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis. By giving patients the tools they need to manage their condition, the program improves not only their physical health but also their overall quality of life. The successful pilot study in the Netherlands highlights the potential of this program to be implemented on a broader scale, which could have a positive impact on healthcare systems worldwide.
