Have you undergone ankle surgery and is the surgeon allowed you to start rehabilitation? Make an appointment here.
If you have had ankle surgery, it is important to start physiotherapy as soon as possible. Of course, the surgeon must give permission for this. Sometimes you may only start later because the structures that have been operated on may not yet be loaded.
The first phase is aimed at reducing swelling and pain and increasing the mobility of the ankle. Mobility is important to ultimately experience as few restrictions as possible in your daily life and sport.
Once the mobility has been optimized, strength building can be started in order to improve the load capacity and functionality of the ankle. You need this strength to be able to take a long walk, for example, but also to maintain the stability of the ankle joint.
If the strength phase has been successfully completed, training will take place on sport-specific goals. In this phase, attention is paid to the explosiveness of the muscles around the ankle joint and running is started.
Before you start running, your footwear will be looked at. A gait analysis is performed, resulting in a shoe recommendation. Shoes form the basis of the gait pattern and can be an important cause of the development of ankle complaints.
Your rehabilitation is specifically aimed at the goals you set yourself. The first phase is about getting the pain and swelling under control and improving the mobility of the ankle. Then the load capacity of the ankle is addressed. Finally, there is sport-specific training.
During the intake, your ankle problem will be mapped out on the basis of an interview and a physical examination.
After the intake, a treatment plan is drawn up and discussed. It tells you what the best treatment is for you.
Tests are taken at fixed times and questionnaires are completed to monitor your rehabilitation. The outcome is evaluated and the treatment plan adjusted if necessary.
After an ankle operation, there will be a lot of practice in our exercise room to build up mobility and strength. In addition, it can be decided to tape your ankle or to treat it by means of dry needling, manual therapy or the Mulligan concept.
