The duration of the treatment after hip replacement strongly depends on the goals you set for yourself. Read more about the rehabilitation on this page.
Have you undergone an operation in which a prosthesis has been placed or are you going to have a hip prosthesis in the near future? Make an appointment here.
If your hip shows advanced wear (arthrosis) and physiotherapy has no effect on your complaints, surgical placement of a hip prosthesis may be considered. The orthopedic surgeon has the choice of two surgical options.
The dorso-lateral approach can be chosen in which the hip is replaced from the back (buttock region) of the hip joint
A second option is the anterolateral approach where the prosthesis is placed from the front of the hip joint.
Your attending physician will decide in consultation with you which surgical technique is the best solution for your hip problem. After the operation, it is important to make an appointment with one of our physiotherapists within a week. This way we can quickly get started with you and work on restoring the mobility of your hip and improving its load-bearing capacity.
Your rehabilitation is specifically aimed at the goals you set yourself. The first phase is to control the pain and swelling and improve the mobility of the hip. This is followed by training to increase the load capacity of the hip in order to function properly again in daily life. Eventually you will no longer be limited in daily activities. Rotational sports such as football or hockey are not recommended, but tennis in a double form is feasible.
During the intake, your hip problem will be mapped out on the basis of an interview and a physical examination.
After the intake, a treatment plan is drawn up and discussed. It tells you what the best treatment is for you.
When you have had a hip replacement, you will be treated according to our care plan. This care plan has been specially developed for people who have had a hip replacement and shows good results.
Tests are taken at fixed times and questionnaires are completed to monitor your rehabilitation. The outcome is evaluated and the treatment plan adjusted if necessary.
In principle, individual agreements will be made with you. As soon as the hip allows it, we will work with you in our exercise room. This is done in groups with a maximum of three people per group.

It is not advisable to exercise intensively with a hip prosthesis. Walking and cycling are among the possibilities. Tennis (doubles) is also often possible. Other ball sports are not recommended because they increase the risk of problems with the prosthesis. During rehabilitation, in addition to exercise therapy, your gait pattern will also be examined and an appointment will be made for shoe advice
