Shin splint complaints are a common complaint among athletes, especially runners.
Shin splint complaints often arise when intensity (duration or speed) is built up too quickly or when walking on a different surface than normal.
Another cause may be that you are walking on shoes that do not provide the right support or that the shoes you are walking on are too old.
If you have shin splint complaints, make an appointment quickly. The longer you keep walking around with these kinds of complaints, the longer the recovery will take.
Your rehabilitation is specifically aimed at the goals you set yourself. The first phase is about getting the pain under control and getting back to a normal walking pattern. Everything that you can do pain-free is allowed and has a positive influence on the recovery. Pain is a signal to avoid activities.
When the pain is under control and walking is pain-free, you can start improving the flexibility of the muscle and optimizing the strength. If the strength is good, sport-specific exercises can be started to eventually be able to exercise again without complaints.
During the intake, your shin splint complaint is mapped out on the basis of an interview and a physical examination.
After the intake, a treatment plan is drawn up and discussed. It tells you what the best treatment is for you.
If you have shin splint complaints, you will be treated according to our care plan. The care plan has been specially developed for shin splint complaints and shows good results.
Tests are taken at fixed times and questionnaires are completed to monitor your rehabilitation. The outcome is evaluated and the treatment plan adjusted if necessary.
After the intake, it can be decided to apply taping. Exercise therapy is often the obvious treatment strategy. This is possible soon after the onset of the shin splint complaint. If enough strength can be measured, sport-specific exercises and gait training can be started in order to work towards sports resumption in a responsible manner.
Before starting with the sport-specific phase, a gait analysis and shoe advice will first be carried out so that the chance of recurring shin splint complaints is minimized.
