With a partially torn tendon (tendon rupture), the fibers that are still intact have to work harder and there is a risk of overload. It is important to determine the size of the tear (using ultrasound) and to decide whether fysiotherapy has a chance of success.
If the tendon tear is large (more than 50 percent of the tendon thickness), consideration should be given to referring you to an orthopedist via your GP. Once we know how big the rupture is, a plan of action will be made with you.
A relatively small tear in one of the tendons around the shoulder joint can be treated well with fysiotherapy, where we sometimes ask the GP to prescribe an anti-inflammatory. If fysiotherapy has insufficient results, we ask your GP to refer you to an orthopaedist for further assessment.
