NATO summit 2025: consequences for road traffic
The Netherlands will host the NATO summit 24 in The Hague on 25 and 2025 June. Our country will welcome dozens of world leaders and ministers and thousands of delegation members. In order to transport them safely and undisturbed between Schiphol and The Hague, traffic and safety measures are needed. In the Randstad, road users may experience very serious inconvenience on the days surrounding the summit.
1 integrated mobility plan
The scale of the necessary measures for the transport of world leaders, such as road closures and diversions, is very large. It concerns not only measures on the motorways, but also on regional and local roads. Rijkswaterstaat has been asked by the NCTV to draw up 1 integral mobility plan on behalf of all parties involved. Rijkswaterstaat has gained experience with the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) in 2014. However, given the changed political situation in the world, more measures must be taken than in 2014. The impact for citizens, companies and institutions will therefore be much greater than during the NSS.
Disruption from Sunday afternoon June 22 to Friday June 27
Road users between Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam must take into account the first disruptions on the road from Sunday afternoon 22 June. This is due to the necessary preparations, such as the placement of barriers. Due to (temporary and partial) closures of (motor)ways, on- and off-ramps and viaducts and tunnels on the A5, A4, A44 and N44 roads, there is a chance of serious disruption from that moment until Thursday 26 June. The same applies to regional and local roads around and in The Hague, Wassenaar, Katwijk, Noordwijk, Haarlemmermeer, Leiden and Rotterdam.
If everyone continues their usual travel behaviour, road users should expect a tripling of the normal traffic during rush hour. This means that if on an average day in the Randstad there is a traffic jam of about 150 km, in this situation it could increase to as much as 450 km. This is the result if no one changes their travel behaviour.
Impact of NATO summit on road traffic
- Serious traffic disruption from Sunday 22 to Thursday 26 June in the Randstad between Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Both on the motorways and on regional and local roads.
- Very serious traffic disruption, particularly on:
- Monday afternoon and evening June 23
- Tuesday morning June 24
- Wednesday afternoon and evening June 25
- Wassenaar, the Bulb Region, Noordwijk, Katwijk, Leiden and Haarlemmermeer, among others, are difficult to reach.
- The underlying road network is becoming congested.
Closed route: corridor
Together with the police and the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism Security (NCTV), safety and the impact on traffic have been examined. The transport of the world leaders from Schiphol to The Hague will take place via a cordoned off route, the so-called corridor, over the A5, A4, A44 and N44, with 1 or more lanes being closed.
