'Thirty years ago, our vision was revolutionary: active rehabilitation and intensive exercise therapy with the aim of mobilization - the foundation of sports physiotherapy. Now that approach is commonplace, but it is mainly about the nuances. Exercises must fit your specific patient. Customization, in other words. That is why people consciously choose this practice.'

As a physiotherapist, I believe it's important to work with the patient to determine how we can achieve their goals, taking into account all the influencing factors. I provide insight into the complaint so the patient can continue independently and with confidence.
In my treatments, I seek a balance between scientific evidence and the patient's wishes. I also teach first-year physiotherapy students at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.

'Always communicate clearly: 'This is the plan, that is the timeline and this is what we ask of you.' I urge people to stick to their prescribed exercises, both here in the office and at home. I always insist on adherence to therapy – whether or not the patient himself is responsible for his recovery.'

'Focusing on the patient's self-management is essential. The time of the physiotherapist who gave standard massages is over, except for a few specific complaints. A thigh that is overloaded because someone regularly runs 10 kilometers, is not more resilient if I have massaged it. It undoubtedly feels a bit more pleasant temporarily, but it does not offer a permanent solution.'
